Traffic slowly pulled up to a stop as the barriers began to lower at the Lift Bridge over the River Bure crossing Breydon Water as they waited for the bridge to be lowered back down. Some of the drivers watch as a large sailing vessel crosses into main shipping channel from the River Yare. The bridge started to lower a few moments after the sailing vessel had safely passed through the channel. BANG A 7.5-tonne lorry lurches forward into the back of a dark blue Volvo pushing it through the barrier. The lorry driver rips out the ignition key causing the lorry to shudder to a halt leaving the Volvo perched on the edge. The bridge slowly closes crushing the Volvo as it lowers. The lorry driver jumps out of his cab and runs over to the Volvo and peers into the wreckage. ‘Hang in their buddy, help is on the way!’ he says. He quickly pulls out his mobile phone and punches in 999 ‘Operator I would like all three emergency services please, there has been an accident on the A12 Breydon Water lift bridge involving a 7.5-tonne lorry and a Volvo as well as the Breydon Water Lift Bridge. There is one casualty in the Volvo that has been trapped by the lift bridge and requires immediate treatment for what I can only ascertain is life-threatening injuries!’ ‘Understood the emergency services are en route to you they should be with you within 10 minutes, can you provide details of the casualty?’ ‘The casualty is a white male I would guess in the mid-thirties; Injuries I cannot see any bleeding, but I would guess there might be head injuries as the car has been flipped onto its roof.’ ‘The emergency services will be with you shortly please stay on the line until they get to you!’ ‘Understood!’ The lorry driver walks back over to the Volvo and crouches down by the drivers’ door ‘Hey buddy, everything is going to be OK, the emergency services are en route and should be here in a couple of minutes! Can you tell me if you have any pain anywhere?’ ‘My head hurts and so does my back!’ ‘Can you move your arms and legs?’ ‘My legs are pinned down, but I can feel them, and the good news is I don’t think they are hurt, what happened?’ ‘You were hit from behind by my lorry when its air brakes failed and pushed your car into the lift bridge!’ ‘You should keep your vehicle in better shape!’ ‘I thought I did, it just passed the MOT with flying colours, not even a single advisory!’ ‘I think the garage will be in trouble!’ ‘You’re not kidding I am not even a mile from the garage!’ Sirens can be heard in the distance from both directions getting louder by the second. ‘Not long now, just hang in their buddy!’
